چکیده

The Upper Yangtze River Basin comprises a densely-populated agricultural region with mountainous and hilly landforms. Intensive cultivation has been extended onto steep hillslopes, which constitute the principal source area for sediment production. Soil conservation on sloping arable lands is thus of utmost priority for persisting sustainable agricultural production and maintaining sound ecosystem services. Although there have been many soil conservation techniques, either promoted by the government or adopted by local farmers, the practiced area was very limited relative to the total area affected by soil erosion. This paper attempts to introduce four popular soil conservation measures on sloping arable lands in this region to enhance a broader scale of implementation, including hedgerow buffers, level trenches, sloping terraces and limited downslope tillage. These practices, although developed from local farmers’ indigenous knowledge for productive purposes, have well conformed to our contemporary understanding of soil erosion processes on sloping landscape affected by human disturbances, were of sound suitability OPEN ACCESS Sustainability 2014, 6 4796 to regional manual tillage agriculture and more trade-off-efficient on rill prevention, runoff harvest and nutrient management.

Influence of tiller heterogeneity on yield components of rice grown under different nitrogen regimes

Increase in rice yield under excessive nitrogen (N) supply is negligible, hence it is necessaryto analyze the limiting factors via yield components. The present study was carried out during2014 and 2015 growing seasons in order to quantify the yield componenents of different typesof tiller at various N levels. Tillers were divided into three different types (superior, mediumand inferior) based ...

Dynamics of the lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin, China, since late nineteenth century.

The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin have the most representative and largest concentration of freshwater lakes in China. However, the size and number of these lakes have changed considerably over the past century due to the natural and anthropogenic impact. The lakes, larger than 10 km(2) in size, were chosen from relief maps and remotely sensed images in 1875, 1950, 1970, 1...
